Half-Term in Paris: A Valentine’s Day to Remember for our Students

Over the half-term break, our Year 12 and 13 students had the unforgettable experience of a trip to Paris as part of their A-Level studies in Art, Photography, English Language, English Literature and Sociology. The trip provided the perfect blend of culture, creativity, and adventure, giving students the opportunity to explore world-famous galleries, soak in breathtaking views, and immerse themselves in the literary and artistic history of the French capital.

The adventure began with a scenic boat cruise along the River Seine, a fitting way to take in the beauty of Paris. Floating past the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Musée d’Orsay, students saw the city from a new perspective while capturing stunning photos along the way. The exploration continued at the Musée d’Orsay, where they admired masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas, gaining inspiration for their own artistic work.

No trip to Paris would be complete without visiting the Louvre, home to the world-famous Mona Lisa. Students navigated the vast halls of the museum, discovering incredible artworks and experiencing firsthand the scale and grandeur of one of the world’s most renowned cultural landmarks.

The Pompidou Centre, with its unique architectural design and impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, provided another highlight of the trip. Students were encouraged to reflect on the evolution of artistic expression, further enriching their studies. A visit to Montparnasse Tower allowed for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, with the Eiffel Tower illuminated against the Parisian skyline - a truly unforgettable moment.

A planned visit to Notre Dame took an unexpected turn when the American Vice President arrived at the same time, preventing access to the cathedral. While slightly disappointed, students still admired the striking Gothic architecture from the outside.

Beyond the scheduled visits, the trip encouraged students to engage with Paris in a way that went beyond the classroom. Whether sketching in a gallery, capturing the city’s essence through photography, or reflecting on the literary significance of the locations visited, every moment was an opportunity for learning and inspiration. To add a fun challenge, students also took part in a photo competition, with the task of capturing the best photo of someone taking a photo of art! This creative twist encouraged them to think about perspective, composition, and the way we interact with art in modern spaces.

A huge thank you to the staff who organised and accompanied the trip, making this incredible experience possible. The students represented Guilsborough Academy with enthusiasm and curiosity, and we can’t wait to see how this trip influences their creative and academic journeys.
