Celebrating 20 Years of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with Mr Flanagan

This year marks a significant milestone at Guilsborough Academy, as we celebrate 20 years of Mr Flanagan delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award.

Over the past two decades, our dedicated Head of Lifeskills, Mr Flanagan has supported hundreds of students through Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards - opening doors to personal growth, resilience, and unforgettable experiences.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr Flanagan shares:

I’ve seen the DofE programme modernise over the years, but it's heart has always stayed the same—helping young people discover their strengths, build confidence, and grow through challenge. It’s been a privilege to witness our students succeed, including at Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace, and to see my own children complete the award too.

This past weekend, 37 of our Year 9 students set out on their Bronze Award expeditions, overcoming personal barriers and working together in true DofE spirit. From navigating routes to setting up camp and cooking meals, they showed determination, teamwork - and a clear appreciation for toasted marshmallows!

We are also incredibly proud of Jemima Lambert, who recently received her Gold Award at Buckingham Palace -an outstanding achievement that reflects her commitment and perseverance throughout the programme.

A heartfelt thank you to Mr Flanagan for two decades of dedication, leadership, and inspiration. Your commitment has given so many students the opportunity to thrive through the DofE journey. Here’s to 20 years of challenge, growth, and adventure - and to many more to come!
