Our Eco Committee has had an inspiring and educational term, with recent visits that have sparked exciting ideas for the future.

The committee visited Welford Primary School, where they met with their school’s enthusiastic Eco Squad. It was a great opportunity to share the brilliant work both schools are doing to achieve Eco Schools status. The students exchanged ideas and discussed current projects focused on sustainability and environmental awareness. We’re now looking forward to working together on joint eco-friendly initiatives, including some Christmas crafts using sustainable resources – something to watch out for later this year!

The committee also took a trip to Market Harborough’s Eco Village, where they were warmly welcomed by Zoe and the team. The visit offered valuable insights into the wide range of sustainable shopping and community-led environmental projects that take place in this innovative space.

Some of the highlights from the visit included:

  • A refill shop offering plastic-free alternatives for cooking ingredients, toiletries, cleaning products, and – to the delight of our students – sweets!
  • A second-hand shop filled with high-quality clothing, gifts, and cards made by local independent businesses.
  • A welcoming community café serving delicious vegan food and drinks, many made with ingredients grown in their on-site garden.
  • The Community Fridge, which helps reduce food waste by offering free surplus food donated by supermarkets and individuals. It’s a fantastic initiative and they are always looking for more support to help with running costs.
  • A creative space used by local groups – during our visit, a craft group was busy making eco-friendly art.
  • The Paint Pottle, a pottery painting business, also makes great use of the space.
  • The Repair Café, held every Saturday from 10am–1pm, where skilled volunteers help fix electrical and mechanical items to save them from landfill.

We left the Eco Village inspired by the possibilities of what communities can achieve when they come together for the environment. We highly recommend families visit next time you’re in Market Harborough – it’s a fantastic place to explore sustainability in action.

We’re proud of the enthusiasm and commitment our Eco Committee continues to show, and we look forward to sharing more green projects with you in the months ahead!
