Winter Water Safety

As temperatures drop, frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers may look inviting—but they are extremely dangerous. Ice can break without warning, and falling into freezing water can be life-threatening.
Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service has reported several recent incidents involving people, especially young people, venturing onto frozen water. We’re urging all students, parents, and carers to help keep everyone safe this winter.
Key Safety Advice:
- Never walk, play, or skate on frozen water
- Keep children and pets away from icy surfaces
- If you see someone in trouble, call 999 immediately—do not attempt to rescue them yourself
